Africa + Mid East Intro

Since the 1990s, Riverside has been involved in water resource projects in Africa and the Middle East. Riverside's work includes developing and implementing hydrologic river forecasting systems, water resources planning and management, and evapotranspiration in Uganda, Morocco, South Africa and Iraq. In addition, Riverside has been providing advanced river forecasting systems, and decision support systems along one of the most important rivers in the region — the Nile.

Evapotranspiration Mapping in Morocco

Current irrigation demands are depleting surface water supplies and have increased groundwater use beyond sustainable aquifer recharge rates. Riverside developed physically based, spatially distributed evapotranspiration (ET) estimates using energy balance-based remote sensing techniques. (Read more…)

Eastern Nile Planning Model

The Eastern Nile region required a mutually acceptable water resources planning tool. Working with World Bank and Eastern Nile Technical Regional Office officials, Riverside designed a mutually acceptable water resources planning model project, incorporating the needs and concerns of all three riparian countries. Flood Risk Mapping in Pilot Areas of Ethiopia and Sudan

One of the major activities of the Flood Preparedness and Early Warning sub-project is flood risk mapping in pilot areas of Ethiopia and Sudan. Riverside developed a comprehensive approach to assess flood hazard, vulnerability, and risk in the flood-prone pilot study area. (Read more…)
